Rapid City Regional Airport is northeast of Custer and has the shortest commercial-airport drive for most visitors. Rental-car supply and flight schedules vary, so compare those before choosing a more distant airport.
US-385 construction can affect the Rapid City approach, and US-16A work can delay Custer State Park traffic. Needles Highway closes seasonally after the first snow; it is not a through route for oversized vehicles.
Check in, walk downtown, and eat dinner in Custer. Save Wildlife Loop Road, Needles Highway, and longer hikes for daylight.
