Check in, walk Mount Rushmore Road, visit the 1881 Courthouse Museum if it is open, and eat dinner downtown.

Saturday: Wildlife Loop Road and downtown dinner

Eat breakfast in Custer, enter the park for Wildlife Loop Road, allow for bison traffic and overlooks, then return to town before dinner.

Main activity

Drive Wildlife Loop Road through the prairie

The 18-mile road crosses open grassland used by bison, pronghorn, and burros. Remain in the vehicle near animals and allow more than the official 90-minute estimate when wildlife stops traffic.

4:30 PM

Afternoon

Return to downtown Custer

Walk Mount Rushmore Road, visit the 1881 Courthouse Museum if it is open, or rest before the dinner reservation.

Sunday

Sunday: Sylvan Lake shore before departure

Eat breakfast in Custer, check SD511, then follow US-16A and SD-87 to Sylvan Lake for the 1.1-mile shore trail before driving home.
